--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
My name is Miss Fran. Being a teacher is not just a profession I take very seriously, it is also my hobby and my day by day motivation. I do like to talk, watch movies and travel, but nothing compares to what it means to be a teacher. I was born in Santiago, Chile.
During my childhood and youth, my father worked for the United Nations and I was able to live in different countries and be exposed to various cultures. In 2003, my father was assigned to the UN Headquarters in NYC, and I studied all 4 years of High School at Greenwich High School in Connecticut. It was an experience I will hardly forget, not just because High School is such an important phase, but also because during my senior year internship I found what I wanted to do with my life. I decided to be an Elementary Teacher. After senior year, my family and I moved back to Chile and I started my pursuit of becoming an educator.
I graduated with a Bachelors’ in Education and Early Childhood Degree. Right after college I started teaching at one of the most prestigious bilingual schools of Chile and soon graduated with a Masters Degree on Special Needs and Psychology. In Chile, I had the wonderful experience of teaching in bilingual settings, taught future teachers at the University and had a private practice to work with special needs children, school integration and families.
After 8 years of classroom instruction and working in an educational environment, I had the opportunity to come back to the US as an educator. I was encouraged and determined that coming back to the U.S was the right path, especially to this area. Being able to integrate culture and language knowledge in my teaching practice is very rewarding. This is currently my fourth year in North Carolina and I couldn't be happier. I have grown fond of this state! I have the cutest North Carolina Westie dog (Hos)!
Now being part of SWE is the icing on the cake! I have great colleagues and friends here which encourages me even more to be part of this community.

Maestras de ESL/ESL Teachers
Hi there. My name is Claire Soules and this is my second year at Southwest Elementary School as an English as a Second Language teacher. My experience teaching has covered a wide range, not only in grade levels, but also geographically. Over the last 20 years, I have taught in Virginia, New York and North Carolina. I’ve enjoyed the time I spent teaching High School, as well as my time with the little ones in Elementary School. Teaching students from all over the globe has provided me a rich education in many cultures and languages, but I am only fluent in English and Spanish.
About 20 years ago, I decided to go back to school to change careers and become an ESL teacher. This was the best career decision I could make, and have been so happy with my choice ever since. I have had the opportunity to meet and teach students from all over the globe. My time with these wonderful people has enriched my life in ways I could never imagine before. I’m grateful to my students for what I have learned from them and for the example they set of persevering. In 2014 I took a 4.5 year path away from the classroom to work with the Migrant Education Program as the Program Director. We provided tutoring services for children of migrant workers both in the classroom and in the home. I gained a profound understanding of the plight of these students and the strength of character that helps them achieve and overcome the many obstacles they face in this country. It's a pleasure to be back in the classroom again and to finish up my teaching years doing what I love best – teaching! |
My name is Kimberly Sussman Green. I use both surnames interchangeably, but the students feel most comfortable calling me Ms. Green. This is my 15th year teaching and my 5th year in Durham Public Schools. I have a teaching license in Elementary Education (K-6), Language Arts (6-9), English as a Second Language (K-12), Spanish as a Foreign Language (K-12), and Special Education. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, with an emphasis on Language and Culture, and I have a Master’s Degree in Teaching. I speak English, French, and Spanish, and I will do my best to communicate with families in a language in which they are most comfortable.
My class offers a structured mix of teacher-led whole-group activities and small-group learning in play-based and child-directed centers. My biggest goals are to teach your child to be an independent learner and problem solver; to build on reading fluency, comprehension, and response to text; to explore, research, and write about all content areas; to foster a love for learning; and for your child to leave the classroom with a healthy sense of self. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Me llamo Kimberly Sussman Green. |
